While The Onion is obviously a comical place, this recent article entitled “Umpire’s Perfect Game Goes Completely Unnoticed” got me thinking about how under appreciated umpires can be. They make the correct calls the vast majority of the time, but everyone wants a computer to replace them they make one mistake.
I’ve watched a lot of baseball in the past two summers while working at a ballpark and while not every ump is a role model, most of them do a good job. It’s a lot of pressure to have to know those minute rules at the drop of a hat, especially in Little League where the ball is flying all over the place.
Thanks umps, we couldn’t have such a great sport without you!
