Not All (i)Books Are Created Equal

Apple has announced their new iBook program that allows anybody to create an interactive textbook about anything they want. Seems like it’s a great idea, and I’m sure it will lead to many great things. Everybody has something they can teach others and learners benefit from being taught affordably by the masses.

However, learners need to beware. As Seth Godin noted about publishing e-books: When anyone can publish anything, they will.

Just because your iBook has a few fancy spinning diagrams doesn’t mean you have created a quality educational experience. And that’s what these have become.

The 1900s were about books. They’re not good enough anymore, we’ve moved beyond them. iBooks are educational experiences.

Step it up authors.
