I didn’t watch the football game tonight just because it was on.
An hour before the game started I was excited about two things tonight: watching the 49ers play the Lions and reading my book.
But when I plopped down on the couch, flipped on NBC, and opened Eat & Run to chapter 13 I realized that having the game droning on in the background just wasn’t worth it. Not because it wasn’t a good game, but because I realized that I had the game on just because it was on.
So I turned it off and read my book.
This is usually the case, I’ve found when you are doing two activities at once, and by trying to multitask—even if you are a woman who thinks she can—you are not being as productive as possible with either activity. Nobody can read and watch TV at the same time with as much retention in both activities as the would if they read first, and watched later… And the chances are with TV these days, it’s probably not even worth watching later.
